Shimano XTR Race and Shimano XT Mountain Bike Pedals

Last updated August 09, 2011 - Send Feedback
Shimano XTR 'Race' pedal
Shimano XTR 'Race' M-980 pedal

Which mountain bike pedal for cross country use?

I weighed on my gram-accurate lab scale both the Shimano XTR 'Race' PD-M980 pedals and the Shimano XT PD-M770 pedals. Both pedals weighed in lighter than the nominal claimed weight.

Shimano XTR 'Race': 306g
        Shimano XT: 339g
        Difference: 33g = 1.16 ounce

The XTR pedals have superior bearings and save you just over one ounce per pair of pedals. For those building the ultimate bike, they’re the way to go, but otherwise you can likely save $100 or so by sticking with the XT pedals. Using both, I can detect no difference in function.

See pricing at Amazon for Shimano pedals.
